The Screenwriters Rights Association of India (SRAI) is the Copyright Society to protect and promote the rights of Indian audio-visual authors (screenwriters) of cinematographic works, as defined under Section 33 of the Copyright Act of 1957

With the revolutionary 2012 amendment in the Copyright Act 1957, an author’s right to receive royalties became non-assignable to anybody except to their legal heir/s or to the relevant copyright society. With India being the largest producer of feature films and TV soap operas globally, the number of writers living or dead who are potential royalty earners is also the biggest. (As per law now, when a film, TV serial, OTT show or any audio visual work is commercially shown outside of a cinema hall, a percentage of that earning is received by the author as royalty.)

Hence the Screenwriters Rights Association of India (SRAI) was formed with a view to collect due royalties for its author-members and for their fellow international authors whose works may be commercially shown in India.
