SRAI ROC registration date - 2014
The founding concept for SRAI began in 2013 after the rules of the Amended Copyright Act were gazetted. SRAI was registered as a section 8 company under the Companies Act in 2014.
THE BIRTH OF SRAI
2014
SRAI was formed with an initial membership of 4 authors and 3 producers. SRAI founder members had in the previous year travelled to a few European Countries and met with leading CMO’s (Copyright Management Organisations) like VG Wort of Germany, ALCS in UK, SACD and CISAC in France, DAMA in Spain and also met with WIPO officials in Geneva to understand the workings of a CMO. CISAC offered help in setting up SRAI and invited SRAI for W&DW events.
FIRST STEPS
Global Alliances and Advocacy
2014 /2023
From 2014 W&DW invited SRAI founder members to its various congresses held in Istanbul 2014, Beijing 2015, Venice 2017, Algiers 2018, Moscow 2019. CISAC also invited SRAI to present a paper at the UNESCO in Geneva in 2016. Writers & Directors Worldwide through their various congresses helped SRAI understand the challenges faced by authors and creators around the world. They also gave their unilateral support for the formation and registration of SRAI as the Copyright Society for Indian Screenwriters. SINCE 2021, AVACI (AUDIOVISUAL AUTHORS INTERNATIONAL CONFEDERATION) BASED IN ARGENTINA HAS LENT CRUCIAL SUPPORT TO SRAI. SRAI REPRESENTATIVES HAVE PARTICIPATED IN AVACI conferences online and their offline congress at Rio De Janeiro (2023). Members of CISAC and FESAL (Latin American Confederation of Authors and Directors) wrote letters in support of SRAI being recognised as the Copyright Society for Screenwriters in India. SRAI is immensely indebted to Yves Nilly of W&DW, Oron Gadi of CISAC and Horacio Maldonado of AVACI for all the support and help offered by them over the years.

Unified Licensing and New Horizons
An important development has accelerated the progress of all Indian Copyright Societies, including that of SRAI. As recommended by the Minister of Commerce & Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, all Indian Copyright Societies have come together to form a Single-Window Licensing system via which collective negotiations for royalty rates and payments can be had with users of our work. To begin with, this body has already initiated meetings for negotiations with the associations of hotels, restaurants, ground events. Shortly, we shall reach out to airlines and tourist bus operators.

After this stage, we shall be initiating meetings with the digital sector - satellite networks, OTT platforms, other online users of our work. Moreover, we have begun the process of working out bilateral arrangements with copyright societies across the world for them to collect royalties from their countries that is due to SRAI members, and for SRAI to collect royalties from India that is due to their members.
